Since 2013, the website search.arch.be of the State Archives has provided free access to millions of digitised church and civil status registers (birth, marriage and death certificates) dating from the 16th century onwards. Step by step, documents are scanned, processed and added to the website. It is thus a continuing procedure. In addition to genealogical sources, the State Archives also increasingly makes other sources available online. Thus, inventories and other search aids become gradually accessible via the search engines.

Are you looking for information from documents that are less than 100 years old?

The Belgian law on the protection of privacy applies to the civil status records and to the data accessible via the search engine ‘Search for persons’. Consequently, information from documents that are less than 100 years old cannot be accessed.
